San Jose, CA – True Thing Collective is pleased to present Close to the Skin, an exhibition featuring the work of six artists exploring deeply personal and intimate narratives. The show opens on Saturday, November 16, 2024, with an opening reception from 5 to 7 PM at Works/San Jose (38 S 2nd Street, San Jose, CA), and will be on view through December 21, 2024.

The title Close to the Skin speaks to the deeply intimate and uninhibited nature of the works presented, each one grappling with the corporeal experience of being human. Through a diverse range of media—ceramics, sculpture, mixed media, painting, and installation—the artists explore themes of strength, fragility, sexuality, pain, and the complexities of identity. The exhibition reveals a raw and visceral emotional landscape, where vulnerability and empowerment collide.

Curated by artist Katharine T. Jacobs, the show features works from:

  • Katharine T. Jacobs: Her ceramic and mixed media pieces delve into chronic illness, pain, and personal reckoning.

  • Sydney Brown: Brown’s reliquaries and memorial objects tenderly address family histories and the journey of motherhood.

  • Jackelin Solorio: Solorio’s sculptural works wrestle with themes of fertility, feminine archetypes, and family.

  • Lucia Znamirowski: Znamirowski’s psychological portraits challenge perceptions of identity, beauty, and the fragility of the human psyche.

  • Dani Torvik: Torvik’s abstract canvases, awash in fleshy tones, explore the intersection of gender norms and power dynamics through architectural abstraction.

  • Laamie Young: Young’s baroque-inspired foam objects critique the societal expectations of feminized over-ornamentation and classism.

The works in Close to the Skin come together to form a narrative that is both intensely personal and universally resonant, offering a glimpse into the experiences of women navigating the intricacies of the human condition.
